A Federal Contractor Without a Vision Will Struggle: Find Your Stride in The Trump Administration and Become a Philanthropist!

Introduction

The federal contracting landscape is evolving, creating new opportunities and challenges for businesses. Success requires CEOs and boards to understand policy shifts, adapt strategies, and position their companies for long-term growth. Small, minority-owned, and service-disabled veteran-owned firms are vital to America’s economy. Without a clear vision, businesses risk stagnation, downsizing, or failure. This article outlines key strategies for navigating federal contracting in 2025 and beyond, emphasizing compliance, innovation, and philanthropy as integral components of success.

Strategy for Small Business in Government Contracting

Historically, large corporations have dominated government contracting, even when agencies meet their 23% small business procurement goals. Over 70% of contracts still go to larger firms. Yet, small businesses remain essential to the economy, employing 45.9% of private-sector workers and driving job creation, innovation, and competitiveness.

Starting With the End in Mind: Philanthropy & Small Business Success

Government procurement should foster not just business growth but also community reinvestment. Many of today’s leading philanthropists were once small business owners who built wealth through innovation. Imagine a contracting culture that actively promotes wealth-building and philanthropy to address societal challenges. Inspired by Robert Reich’s insights on philanthropy’s role in shaping America, I encourage businesses to integrate a vision of giving into their strategic goals.

Strategic Partnerships: Strength in Collaboration

To thrive in government contracting, businesses must cultivate partnerships that enhance their capabilities and competitiveness:

  • Joint Ventures & Teaming Agreements: Strengthen capabilities to meet contract requirements.

  • Subcontracting with Prime Contractors: Large firms must allocate portions of contracts to small and disadvantaged businesses.

  • Industry Networking: Attend procurement events, engage with agencies, and join business associations to stay informed.

A Federal Contractor Without a Vision Will Struggle: Find Your Stride in The Trump Administration and Become a Philanthropist!

Technology & Digital Readiness

Government procurement is increasingly digital. Businesses must adopt the following technological tools to remain competitive:

  • Cybersecurity Compliance: Adhere to federal security standards such as NIST 800-171.

  • Cloud-Based Procurement Tools: Platforms like SAM.gov and eBuy streamline the contracting process.

  • Data Analytics for Competitive Bidding: Analyze past contract awards to optimize proposals.

Financial Preparedness: Access to Capital

Managing the financial demands of government contracting requires strategic planning:

  • Government-Backed Loans & Grants: Programs like SBA 7(a) and SBIR provide essential funding.

  • Line of Credit Arrangements: Maintain financial stability during contract execution.

  • Invoice Factoring: Convert receivables into immediate capital to support cash flow.

Final Thoughts

Success in federal contracting extends beyond winning bids—it’s about adaptability, resilience, and a commitment to broader economic impact. As government priorities shift, those who evolve with them will thrive. I invite CEOs to take a visionary approach, ensuring their businesses remain competitive while contributing to economic prosperity.

A special thanks to Robert Reich for his thought-provoking insights on philanthropy and economic growth. Let’s build a future where small businesses not only succeed but also give back.

Warm regards,
Keith Moore, CEO, KDM & Associates

Event by the Veteran Owned Business Roundtable - Connect with VETS

Wednesday, April 9, 2025 - Come Join VOBRT's "Connect with VETS" networking event on Wednesday, April 9th, 2025, in Troy, MI. Connect, collaborate, and grow your business!  The VOBRT is a national non-profit organization that is dedicated to the benefit of all Veteran Owned Businesses. The Roundtable was formed in 2005 in response to State of Michigan legislation establishing a goal of 3% of state contracts to be awarded to Service Disabled Veteran Owned Business.

The Roundtable has stood on guard to monitor compliance with that promise of (now 5%) state contracting with SDVOB. Having enlarged our mission today, however, the Roundtable serves ALL veteran owned businesses and our advocacy has succeeded in persuading large, private corporations to pledge similar goals for inclusion of VOB's in existing supplier diversity initiatives.

With the support of our corporate members and government agency partners, we will continue to protect and advance the interests of both SDVOB and VOB, honoring those who have faithfully served our country in the military, and now serve in the private sector.
