What is the Year-End Sprint?

Definition

The Year-End Sprint refers to the last few months of the federal fiscal year, typically from July to September, and the first quarter of the fiscal year when government agencies rush to spend their remaining budget. (Generally, on or before September 30th).  During this period, agencies are more likely to award contracts to ensure that they utilize their full budget allocation for the year.

Why Does It Happen?

Federal agencies operate on a "use it or lose it" budgeting principle. If they don't spend their allocated funds by the end of the fiscal year, they risk having their budget reduced in the subsequent year. This creates a flurry of activity as agencies look to award contracts quickly.

Importance for MBE’s

Opportunity for New Contracts

For MBEs, the Year-End Sprint is a golden opportunity to secure government contracts. Agencies are more willing to take chances on new vendors, including minority-owned businesses, to meet their spending requirements.

Increased Visibility

By participating in the Year-End Sprint, MBEs can gain significant visibility and credibility, which can lead to more opportunities in the future.
