Jennifer M. Granholm’s Leadership in Developing Top Climate & Energy Initiatives

Jennifer M. Granholm, sworn in as the 16th U.S. Secretary of Energy on February 25, 2021, has been instrumental in steering the nation toward a sustainable energy future. Under her leadership, the Department of Energy (DOE) has significantly advanced clean energy initiatives, aligning with President Biden’s goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

In 2024, Secretary Granholm was recognized as a "Titan" on TIME's 100 Most Influential Climate Leaders list, highlighting her pivotal role in expanding U.S. clean energy capacity and modernizing infrastructure for resilient, equitable communities. Notably, the DOE added 60 gigawatts of clean energy capacity within a single year, marking substantial progress toward national climate objectives.

A key focus of Granholm's tenure has been the modernization of the aging U.S. power grid to accommodate increased clean energy production. She emphasizes the necessity for consistent and sustainable funding from Congress to enhance grid infrastructure, ensuring reliable and affordable power for all communities. GovDelivery

Under her guidance, the DOE has launched initiatives like "Cleanup to Clean Energy," aiming to repurpose DOE lands for clean electricity generation. This program seeks to transform previously utilized sites into some of the world's largest clean energy projects, contributing to the administration's ambitious climate goals. Time

Secretary Granholm also advocates for the integration of advanced technologies, such as artificial intelligence and enhanced geothermal systems, to address climate challenges. She underscores the potential of enhanced geothermal energy to provide clean, reliable, and flexible power, identifying it as a valuable yet underfunded climate solution deserving greater investment. Energy Department

Through her dynamic leadership and unwavering commitment to clean energy, Jennifer M. Granholm continues to drive the United States toward a sustainable and equitable energy future, fostering innovation and resilience in the face of climate change. Time
